Hard vs Soft Subtitles

  • Hard subtitles — Burned directly into the video pixels. Cannot be turned off. Guaranteed to display everywhere.
  • Soft subtitles — Stored as a separate track. Can be toggled on/off. Faster to produce, easier to edit later.

Built-in Templates

VideoCaptioner includes preset styles optimized for different content types:

  • Popular Science — Clean, readable fonts with good contrast. Ideal for educational content.
  • News — Professional styling with a semi-transparent background bar.
  • Bilingual — Two-line layout with original language on top, translation below.
  • Minimal — Small, unobtrusive text positioned at the bottom.

Custom Styling (ASS)

For ASS format, you can control:

  • Font family, size, and weight
  • Primary and outline colors
  • Shadow and border settings
  • Vertical and horizontal positioning
  • Margin and padding

Tip

Use soft subtitles during editing and testing, then switch to hard subtitles for the final export. This saves time during iteration.
