Hard vs Soft Subtitles
- Hard subtitles — Burned directly into the video pixels. Cannot be turned off. Guaranteed to display everywhere.
- Soft subtitles — Stored as a separate track. Can be toggled on/off. Faster to produce, easier to edit later.
Built-in Templates
VideoCaptioner includes preset styles optimized for different content types:
- Popular Science — Clean, readable fonts with good contrast. Ideal for educational content.
- News — Professional styling with a semi-transparent background bar.
- Bilingual — Two-line layout with original language on top, translation below.
- Minimal — Small, unobtrusive text positioned at the bottom.
Custom Styling (ASS)
For ASS format, you can control:
- Font family, size, and weight
- Primary and outline colors
- Shadow and border settings
- Vertical and horizontal positioning
- Margin and padding
Tip
Use soft subtitles during editing and testing, then switch to hard subtitles for the final export. This saves time during iteration.
